Beginner Loadout Guide
New to Darkest Hours? This guide covers the 3 best starter loadouts, item priorities, and stamina-efficient playstyles to survive your first 10 trials.
Last verified: 2026-06-28 — derived from Beginner Basics and Escape Trial meta.
🛡️ Loadout #1: Balanced Survivor (Recommended)
The safest starting loadout for new players. Prioritizes survival over speed.
- Item 1: Energy Drink (stamina recovery — highest priority)
- Item 2: Flashlight (utility — reveals entity positions in dark zones)
- Item 3: Bandage (defensive — heals damage from entity contact)
Best for: All-around playstyle. Works in all 4 trial types.
Stamina cost: Low (good for beginners still learning stamina management)
🏃 Loadout #2: Speed Runner
For Escape Trial specialists. Maximizes movement speed and stamina recovery.
- Item 1: Stamina Tablet (large stamina boost — single use, but huge)
- Item 2: Energy Drink (sustained stamina recovery)
- Item 3: Radio (utility — alerts you to entity spawn points)
Best for: Escape Trials and Special Trials with extraction objectives.
Risk: Low healing — you survive by not getting hit, not by healing after.
⚔️ Loadout #3: Tactical Defender
For aggressive playstyles. Trades stamina recovery for entity counterplay.
- Item 1: Energy Drink (stamina recovery)
- Item 2: Stun Grenade (entity counter — 3-second stun on use)
- Item 3: Bandage (defensive)
Best for: Collect/Capture objectives where you need to fight past entities.
Risk: Stun grenades have limited uses — save for emergencies.
📋 Item Priority Tier List
| Tier | Items | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| S | Energy Drink, Stamina Tablet | Stamina is life — these extend survival by 30-50% |
| A | Flashlight, Radio, Bandage | High-utility items with broad applicability |
| B | Stun Grenade, Armor Plating | Situational — strong when used correctly, weak otherwise |
| C | Weapons (Pistol, Knife, Bat) | Defensive only — use to slow entities, not kill |
⚡ Stamina Management 101
Stamina is your most important resource. Running, jumping, and item use all drain stamina. The recovery rate is slow, so plan your movements.
- Walk, don't run, when entity is far away — saves stamina for chases
- Cut corners — entity pathfinding is slow on turns, so sharp angles waste their time
- Use stamina items BEFORE you're empty — recovery items are wasted at full stamina
- Hide, don't fight — hiding restores stamina passively (entities lose aggro after 10 seconds)
